Poverty reduction

Poverty causes illness and prevents access to competent health services. Like everywhere else in the world, the poorest people on Ometepe have to suffer the most. The public health system cannot adequately take care of the whole population. Employees who have health insurance enjoy better care and people who can afford it go to the private sector for medical treatment. On top of that, preventative measures and awareness regarding healthy living rise with higher income. These are the reasons for our activities towards poverty reduction. Women especially have a hard time earning enough money for themselves or their families. The income of simple farmers also does not allow for sufficient access to health services.

Our goal is to overcome the following challenges:

  • Supporting the fair employment of women
  • Creating additional sources of income for farmers
  • Improving individual access to health services
